RIBERA DEL DUERO SORIA

The Legacy of Sorian Clay

In Matanza de Soria lies a small valley of unique soils: a pure clay that recalls the beaten earth of tennis courts. There, centenary vines grow —many of them over 140 years old— yielding an extremely limited production of barely 8–10 barrels per year.

The harshness of the Sorian climate and the uniqueness of this old vineyard, structured in micro-plots, make each vintage distinct; that is why Munierro is a tribute to that land and to the families who have worked it generation after generation. It is a wine born from research and deep knowledge of the terroir, a return to crafting according to the soils in order to recover the purest identity of Antídoto.

Munierro

The story of Munierro begins as a journey to the roots of Bodegas Antídoto. Traditionally, at Bodegas Antídoto wines were crafted according to soil type. Through evolution and growth, that winemaking identity was somehow lost. In honour and remembrance of that early chapter of Bodegas Antídoto, and born from research and deep knowledge of the land and the vineyard we hold, we decided to craft a wine that came purely from clay soils. Munierro thus emerges in a small valley in Matanza de Soria, about five kilometres north of San Esteban de Gormaz. The red ferruginous clay soil has inspired a wine that expresses the most intimate character of Soria.

The choice of this site is no coincidence. Matanza de Soria is the village of David Hernando’s father, and this wine is also a tribute to his family and to all the winegrowing families of the area — to a way of working and of living. The vines, farmed organically by David himself, are ungrafted and are between 140 and 150 years old according to oral tradition. They are spread across some thirty-five micro-plots that total barely 1.7 hectares; the extreme climate and the age of the vines, together with the small size of the vineyard, naturally limit production to around 3,000 bottles per harvest. No two vintages are alike: Soria is an area of extreme climate and is heavily shaped by the vintage effect, which leaves its mark on the wine.

Munierro is a great example of how Sorian clays, combined with altitude and the freshness of the surroundings, give rise to elegant and precise wines. The clay provides volume and fruit, while Soria’s altitude and its continental climate bring tension, energy and a natural freshness. To enhance its longevity we follow a traditional method: long macerations of around 50 days and ageing for about 20–22 months in Bordeaux-style French oak barrels. The grapes are 100% destemmed to respect the elegance of the old vines, and each step is carried out with the necessary attention and patience.

The first vintage of Munierro is 2022. It is made with the same love we put into all our wines, but with a special dedication in the selection of these vines. The result is a wine that expresses the purity of Soria’s clay, the freshness that distinguishes our land, and David Hernando’s personal bond with his origins. Every bottle of Munierro is a testament to respect for the terroir and to the passion for keeping the Sorian winemaking tradition alive.
